• For Players

    • What is a Trek?

      • A Trek is a fun mobile game you download and play at participating museums. The game can be a simple scavenger hunt, a follow-the-clues treasure hunt or a more elaborate adventure style story.

    • How do I get the app?

      • You can download the app by clicking here or you can search for 'TrekSolver' in the App Store or on Google play. After downloading, please open the app and choose the museum you plan to visit so you can download the latest content for that museum.

The app is completely free though your cell phone carrier may charge you for data depending on your data plan. If you download the app (and content) via WiFi at a participating museum, a data charge would not be incurred. We suggest you check with the museum regarding WiFi availability or download prior to your visit.

    • How long is a Trek?

      • Most Treks take 30-60 minutes to play. On each Trek description page, we show you the average time it took other players to complete the Trek.

    • Is a Trek a race?

      • Some Treks may be designed to have you solve clues as quickly as possible, but the game is not intended as a race. Players are free to go at their own pace. Most importantly, we hope you will have fun and discover cool things along the way.

    • If I run out of time, can I continue at a later time?

      • Yes. If you run out of time at the museum, you can complete the Trek later.

    • Can it be a multiplayer game?

      • Yes. Each member of your group can play on their own device to see who finishes first OR you can share one device and play as a group.

    • Is there a reward for completing a Trek?

      • This is determined by the museum. Check with the service desk at the museum you are visiting.

    • What are the rules?

      • You will need to check with the museum you are visiting. At a minimum, it is requested that you respect other visitors, avoid running around people, avoid taking pictures of people you do not know and respect museum rules.

    • For what ages are Treks intended?

      • Treks are available for players of all ages and are rated by players like you! Recommended age and difficulty ratings are shown on the Trek description page.

    • Can children play Treks on their own or do they need adult supervision?

      • Children will be able to play Treks on their own. However, we request that children have adult supervision for safety reasons.

    • Will my child be able to play a Trek without much guidance from a parent?

      • Each Trek is rated from easy to challenging. You will need to choose a Trek that will suit your child, family or group.

    • Are Treks physically demanding? Do they involve climbing over anything?

      • We encourage museums to consider players’ safety when designing Treks. Also, all players rate Treks on how physically strenuous they are. If this is of concern to you, please consult this rating on the Trek info page in the app.

    • Are Treks handicap accessible?

      • We encourage museums to create Treks that are handicap accessible.

    • Are there any in-app purchases?

      • Once you are playing the Trek, there are no additional costs. There may be Premium Treks or Bundled Treks which can be opened by an in-app purchase or promotional code.

    • Is my email address being shared?

      • No. The email address you provide is for limited use such as notifying you of new Treks in your area. Also, if a Trek offers a contest or prize then you may be notified by email.

    • What happens to photos taken during the Trek?

      • Photos are saved to the photo gallery on your device and you will have the option of posting them to your social media accounts. In some cases, we also archive them on our server for cool things like photo contests.

    • Are photos automatically posted to social media?

      • Photos are not posted to social media unless you choose to do so. Photos are stored on your device.

    • What if I lose my WiFi or cellular data connection?

      • Once downloaded, Treks can be played even if you do not have an internet connection. For Treks that involve sending answers to our server (a contest for example), the game will store your responses until you have WiFi or cellular data service again.

    • What if the museum doesn't have WiFi or cell phone service?

      • Players can download Treks prior to their museum visit. Simply run the app where you have WiFi, “Search for Treks” and change the search location.

    • What happens if I get a phone call while playing a Trek?

      • You can leave the app at any time and return to the Trek in progress, just as you can with most apps.

    • What if I forget my account username or password?

      • The app has a link on the login screen for you to contact TrekSolver, who will send you an email instructing you how to proceed.

  • For Museums

    • What is MuseumTrek?

      • MuseumTrek is a fun mobile game that helps your visitors become more engaged while learning about your exhibits and collections. You determine what you would like to showcase in each Trek. The game can be a simple clue solving treasure hunt or an elaborate 'choose your own adventure' style story.

    • Who creates the Trek?

      • A Trek is created in our TrekBuilder by a member of your museum staff. They do not need to be a programmer! Uploading photos and creating clues is easy using our style guides, custom backgrounds and, if needed, our online help screens. You can always call MuseumTrek for assistance at any time.

    • What services does MuseumTrek offer?

      • Depending on your plan and pricing package we offer a certain number of active Treks with a dedicated number of hours for installation and technical support. We provide 'ready to use' background images and style guides.

    • Can MuseumTrek visit our museum to help us determine how best to utilize mobile technology?

      • Yes and we love to do this! We feel that mobile games work best when players interact with the exhibits you have to offer. Often there are simple activities that can be included to help your visitors get the most out of their visit to your museum.

    • How long does it take to create a Trek?

      • Your first Trek may take you two hours to create but your second and third Treks should take half that time. Once you determine the flow of your Trek, entering the clues and graphic images into our TrekBuilder is easy. You can jump right in to create scavenger hunt Treks but treasure hunt Treks take a bit more planning and creativity.

    • I don’t want to create a Trek on my own. Can you create it for me?

      • Yes. We have just the team to put your Trek together. Please contact us to discuss our consulting services.

    • How many clues are needed for each Trek?

      • We suggest 10-20 clues. Anything beyond 20 clues may cause players to feel the game is too long. If a Trek is designed for young children, 10 clues is a good number.

    • What do players need to play a Trek?

      • Players need an Apple or Android device (phone, iPad/tablet, or iPod). The free app will prompt players to create a free account to track their progress. It is best if you can offer WiFi so players with tablets or iPods can download the game.

    • How long does a Trek take to play?

      • We suggest a Trek take between 30-60 minutes to complete. We recommend you create a variety of Treks that would appeal to different age groups and player abilities. Information is provided in the Trek description that shows the average time it took other players to complete. This will help visitors budget their time and ensure the best possible Trek playing experience.

    • How do we keep our game updated if we frequently change our exhibits?

      • With our TrekBuilder, you will find it easy to get into the groove of making changes right along with your exhibits. In circumstances where certain exhibits featured in a Trek change frequently, we suggest a scavenger hunt style Trek. That way, you can delete, add, or replace individual clues super easily.

    • Is there a reward for completing a Trek?

      • You can create a reward if you wish. You might offer players a coupon for a purchase at your café, a discount in your museum store or even an on-the-spot membership conversion. If you prefer to give away a trinket or memento please contact MuseumTrek to discuss the different options you can consider.

    • What feedback can be collected from our museum visitors?

      • You can collect feedback and information regarding visitor experience, who is playing and how often. You can get answers to survey questions throughout the game.

    • What if our museum does not allow photography?

      • While photo clues are a great way to engage visitors, if you do not want to include them in your Treks that is entirely up to you.

    • Can TrekSolver help us create a fully custom app?

      • Yes, absolutely. If you like the TrekSolver platform but wish to incorporate additional features, we may already have planned for those. We strive to provide an easy-to-use TrekBuilder, but also have some advanced features already setup. If you have a vision of a different sort of game or app, please contact us. We will work with you to create just the right concept for your museum.
